No route avoids sustained technical ground. The Bottleneck, a couloir under a hanging serac at roughly 8,200 m, is the crux and the site of the 2008 disaster.

The tallest vertical rock face in Europe, about 1,100 m from scree to summit with an overhang of roughly 50 m near the top. BASE jumping from it has been banned since 1986.

Chaltén means smoking mountain in Tehuelche, from the near-permanent lenticular cloud. Weather windows are short enough that parties wait weeks in town for a two-day gap.

The hanging glacier below the summit is the dablam, a pendant worn by Sherpa women. Serac collapse from it destroyed Camp 3 in 2006.

The southwest face is a set of parallel fluted ice runnels formed by melt and refreeze. A 1966 photo competition named it the most beautiful mountain in the world and the label stuck.

Only about 320 km from the Arctic Circle, so the effective physiological altitude is far higher than 6,190 m suggests. Officially restored to its Koyukon name in 2015.

Emilio Comici's 1933 line up the overhanging north face introduced the idea that a route should follow the drop of water from the summit. The face overhangs its base by about 50 m.

Voted Norway's national mountain in 2002. A granite obelisk rising straight out of Stefjorden; the crux is the Mysosten, a detached block on the south ridge with a committing step across.
Every entry carries an elevation, a topographic prominence, the range it belongs to, the first recorded ascent with the party that made it, and the grade of the route most parties now use. Prominence matters more than raw height for deciding what counts as a separate mountain: Lhotse stands 8,516 m above sea level but only 610 m above the col that joins it to Everest, which is why some lists leave it out entirely.
The register page filters on continent, range, class and a minimum elevation, and will sort on any column. Up to three entries can be held side by side in the comparison tray at the foot of the page.
Grades are given in the system local to the mountain, so a Norwegian route carries a UIAA number and a Chamonix route carries an alpine adjectival grade. The conversion table lines the systems up, with the caveat that agreement breaks down above about 5.10.
Conditions are seasonal and the window is often narrow. Patagonian towers see settled weather for a few days at a time; the Karakoram has a reliable six-week window and almost nothing outside it. The seasons page sets the ranges against the calendar month by month.
On revised elevations. Published heights move. Everest was re-measured at 8,848.86 m in 2020 by a joint Nepal–China survey, replacing the 8,848 m figure from the 1954 Survey of India. Mont Blanc is re-surveyed every two years and its summit ice cap has varied by more than two metres this century. Where a figure is disputed, the register follows the national mapping agency of the country the summit sits in.
